History Research: Religion's Role in Non-Religious Events

Assignment: Choose an American historical event or movement, and write a research paper that answers the following question: "How did religion affect this movement/event?" The event or movement must be one that was non-religious, but where religion had a noticeable impact. The movement that I will be writing about is the Civil Right Movements that occurred in 1896 through 1954 or if you have any other ideas that you want to write about (since the Civil Right Movement will probably be a popular choice) you can give it to me and we can decide from there however the movement/event has to be post-1877 (meaning after 1877). Content: The paper must be 1200-1400 words long, not including the works cited page. The paper must include an introduction that describes the topic and declares the thesis statement (the argument for how to answer the above question), a body that presents source-based evidence to support that thesis, and a conclusion that sums up the arguments and ties the work together. Include at least one quote from each source used; more quotes are permitted, but quoted content cannot be more than 20% of the word count. All quotes must be word-for-word (no paraphrases).
